Highland Junior Golf Championships at Spey Valley (16/10/09)

A total of 60 young golfers from 23 schools representing 27 golf clubs from Highland and Moray took part in the seventh annual Highland Junior Golf Championships held at Spey Valley Golf Course, Aviemore, on Thursday 15 October.

Invergordon Academy and Gordonstoun School won the team events. Lyle McAlpine, Corey McAlpine  and Ross Black of Invergordon Academy won the Highland team event for the Bruce Robertson Trophy with a net score of 241.
Gordonstoun School won the Brian Anderson Shield for the best Moray school team with a score of 235.  The winning Gordonstoun team was Tim Hope, Patrick Styles and Frederick Varly.

Tim Hope  of Gordonstoun  won the Duncan Allan Quaich for recording the lowest boys' scratch score of 77.  Runner-up was Lyle McAlpine of Invergordon Academy with a 78. Jamie Treasurer, Inverness College, was third on 79.

Jennifer Innes, Keith Grammar, won the Grant Trophy for the best girls' scratch score, with 82.

The event was hosted and sponsored by Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort and the prizes were presented by Murray Urquhart, Director of Golf at the Spey Valley course. The North Highland College UHI Millennium Institute also sponsored the event.

Murray Urquhart, PGA Professional, said, "Spey Valley Golf Course and MacDonald Hotels are delighted to continue hosting the Highland Junior Golf Championships. We are committed to promoting the development of junior golf and are pleased to provide the opportunity for juniors across the Highlands to play our Championship Golf Course at Spey Valley, Aviemore."

Alan Fleming, lecturer at North Highland College U H I Millennium Institute said: “We are proud to support the Highland Junior Golf Championship which once again has attracted the top juniors in Highland and Moray local authorities.  The College look forward to continuing to support this event as well as working to promote golf across the area from our base in Dornoch.”

Willie MacKay, Highland Junior Golf Manager, remarked how the standard of junior golf continues to improve.  This year nearly 40 single figure handicap juniors played with a further 20 having a handicap of under 15.  “A fantastic day for north juniors and Highland Council is delighted to work jointly with MacDonalds and North Highland College UHI staging this impressive event,” he said.

Girls’ Scratch – The Grant Trophy:     1. Jennifer Innes, Keith Grammar 82. 2. Katie Masheter, Charleston Academy, Inverness 95; 3. Eleanor Tunn, Thurso High, 96.

Girls’ Handicap – The Sutherland Cup:  1.Katie Masheter, Charleston Academy, Inverness 80 (15).

Boys’ Scratch – The Duncan Allan Quaich:  1. Tim Hope, Gordonstoun, 77; Lyle McAlpine, Invergordon Academy, 78; 3. Jamie Treasurer, Inverness College, 79.

Boys’ Handicap (0-8) – The Skibo Trophy:  1. Freddie Brown, Nairn Academy (3), 76;  2. Christian MacLeod, Nairn Dunbar GC (4), 77; 3. Ali Begg (3), Muir of Ord GC, 77.

Boys’ Handicap (9-16) – Highland clubgolf Trophy:  1. Kieron Rorison, Inverness Royal Academy (12), 71;  2. Cameron Kerr, Elgin Academy (13), 77; 3.  Andrew Kenyon , Culloden Academy (11), 77.

Boys’ Handicap (16+) – The Bonar Shield: 1.  Lee Mackenzie, Dornoch Academy (17), 75.

Highland School Team – Bruce Robertson Trophy:  1. Invergordon Academy net 241 (Lyle McAlpine 77; Ross Black 82, Corey McAlpine, 82;  2. Thurso High net 244 (G. McEwan, 79; M. Parsonage, 81, P. Sangster, 84).

Moray Schools Team – Brian Anderson Shield:  1. Gordonstoun net 235  (Tim Hope 71; Patrick Styles, 79; Frederick Varly, 86;  2. Milnes High, Fochabers, net 255  (Andrew Young,81; Ewan Edward, 87; Kiaran Wilkinson, 87).
