About Waste Management in the Highlands

WELCOME to the About Waste Management pages.  Here you will find plenty of useful information about who we are and what we do.  You can also find out about what we have been up to, facts and figures on our recycling services, and future waste management proposals under these headings:

Our aim is to protect and enhance the quality of the environment by minimising the amount of waste sent to landfill.  We provide a refuse and recycling collection service to households across the region and offer refuse collections to commercial premises.  In addition we promote waste prevention and re-use initiatives to reduce the amount of your waste that is sent to landfill.

Why manage waste?
Historically, waste has always been part of society however there has been a dramatic shift in the way it is managed over recent years.  One of the main reasons for this is linked to Climate Change.  Surprised?  Did you know that landfill sites produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas when rubbish rots down?  Visit the Waste Education & Information pages to find out more about the problems with waste and ways you can help.

How is waste being managed?
The Scottish Government, in agreement with the European Union, have set ambitious targets for Local Authorities to meet over the forthcoming years.  These targets include the reduction of waste going to landfill, maximising recycling, and treating residual waste that cannot be reused or recycled sustainably.
