What is sustainability?
As outlined in the UK Government's Sustainable Development Strategy, sustainable development is quoted as "enabling all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life without compromising the quality of life of future generations".
Why is sustainable development important?
The need and demand for sustainable development in the existing built environment, construction industry and wider a field, is greater now more than ever. Not only are the environmental and social benefits becoming more and more apparent, the business benefits of managing and operating in a sustainable way are becoming increasingly evident and favourable. Businesses, organisations and individuals are now all being encouraged to assess and reduce environmental impacts and associated costs, whilst complying with or going beyond existing and proposed legislation and planning requirements.
The Scottish Government's Sustainable Development Strategy: Choosing Our Future is a key document in driving the whole of Scotland forward and on the path to building a more sustainable future. This document demonstrates the Government's commitment to delivering a sustainable future and highlights a shared framework for the whole of the UK, setting out a common goal for sustainable development across the UK.
