Advice for property owners and developers

Where a proposed development is considered to be a threat to either known or potential archaeological sites, developers may be asked to contract a professional archaeologist to undertake a programme of work. Depending on the significance of the sites, the work may vary from a basic photographic record to archaeological monitoring or excavation.

Our standards for archaeological work set out practical guidelines for a consistent approach to the management of the historic environment within the planning process in Highland.

The standards are intended for use by all those involved in the planning process – to inform planners and applicants of the specific requirements of a particular condition and to make sure historic environment practitioners conduct fieldwork to an acceptable standard.
