Local Government Elections Thursday 4 May 2017

The next elections will take place on 4 May 2017.

Guidance and resources are available from the Electoral Commission if you are interested in becoming a candidate or agent.  

More information about the council elections will be published here in due course.  If you wish to register an interest in receiving more information about the council elections when it becomes available please email elections@highland.gov.uk

Local councillors are responsible for making decisions on your behalf about local services. Councillors are elected using the single transferable vote system. This means voters list the candidates in order of preference.  Electoral Commission has more information about this system.

Prospective Candidates Briefings for the Highland Council Elections are scheduled to be held in the following venues 

Tuesday, 28 February 2017

Wednesday, 1 March 2017
 2pm -   Council Chamber, The Highland Council, Lochaber House, High Street, Fort William, PH33 6EL

Thursday, 2 March 2017
11am -  Council, Chamber, The Highland Council, Council Offices, Tigh na Sgire, Park Road, Portree, IV51 8GP
 4pm -   Council Chamber, The Highland Council, Council Offices, High Street, Dingwall, IV15 9QN

Friday, 3 March 2017
10am -   Council Chamber, The Highland Council, Council Offices, Drummuie, Golspie, KW10 6TA
  3pm -   Chamber, Town Hall, Bridge Street, Wick, KW1 4AJ 

The Highland Council consists of 21 electoral wards, each represented by three or four elected councillors. View boundary maps.

If a local councillor resigns or dies, the seat becomes vacant and a by-election will be called to find a replacement.
