Local Government Elections Thursday 4 May 2017

The Local Government (Council) elections will be held on Thursday, 4 May to elect ward members to The Highland Council. Local councillors are responsible for making decisions on your behalf about local services. The Highland Council consists of 21 electoral wards, each represented by three or four elected councillors.

Standing for election

If you are considering standing for election, the Localcouncillor.scot website will help you understand the many different aspects of a councillor's role, provide you with information to help you decide if being a councillor is for you and make sure you are well prepared should you be elected.

Guidance and resources are available from the Electoral Commission if you are interested in becoming a candidate or agent.

Nominations

Nominations from prospective candidates are being invited from Tuesday, 14 March 2017.  

Nominations will close at 4pm on Wednesday, 29 March 2017.

Candidates and Agents Post Nomination Briefing
 
The Returning Officer would like to offer awareness sessions to prospective candidates and their agents at the dates and venues listed below. These sessions will cover topics such as the nomination procedure, the Election timetable, the issuing of poll cards and postal ballot packs and candidate’s spending limits.

Monday 10 April

Further information for electors

Councillors are elected using the single transferable vote system. Electors will be asked to mark their ballot paper, ranking candidates in preferential order.

It’s up to you to choose how to vote in this election but you must be registered to vote by midnight on Monday, 17 April 2017.

The deadline for applying, amending or cancelling a postal vote is 5pm on Tuesday, 18 April 2017, and for proxy arrangements is 5pm on Tuesday, 25 April 2017.  Emergency proxies after 5pm on Tuesday, 25 April can be issued on medical conditions or on the grounds of work reasons.

If you choose to Vote by post then you cannot vote in person at a polling station.

Postal packs will be issued on the following dates: -

  • Registered voters who have received confirmation from the Electoral Registration Officer that they appear on the postal voters list by 2pm on 29 March 2017 should appear in the first issue and their postal voting pack dispatched on Thursday 13 April 2017
  • Registered voters who have received confirmation from the Electoral Registration Officer that they appear on the postal voters list by 2pm on 7 April 2017 should appear in the second issue and their postal voting pack dispatched on Friday 14 April 2017
  • Registered voters who have received confirmation from the Electoral Registration Officer that they appear on the postal voters list by 5pm on 18 April 2017 should appear in the final issue and their postal voting pack dispatched on Tuesday 25 April 2017
