First Aid Courses

This year we are fortunate to have an enhanced training partnership with Glenmore Lodge, Scotland’s National Outdoor Centre, whereby we can offer ‘free’ places on 1st Aid courses relevant to validating National Governing Body and Highland Council awards.

National Governing Body awards such as Walking Group Leader (WGL), Level 2 Kayak Coach, Trail Cycle Leader and the Single Pitch award are only valid when supported by a relevant and current 1st Aid certificate.

Highland Council’s Walking and Camping Accreditation likewise is only valid when the holder has a relevant  and current 1st Aid certificate obtained by attending a course lasting the minimum of 12 hours.

For the majority of NGB awards the minimum length of first aid course is 12 hours, which in effect is a 2 day course.

The following course would be considered the minimum;

BASP Emergency First Aid
The syllabus meets the requirements of the MLTBs, BCU, SMBLA, BASI, BOF, RYA etc. qualifications

For group leaders working in more remote or demanding locations a longer course would be more appropriate, for example;

BASP HSE First Aid at Work
As approved by HSE. This course is ideal for those people who may be working in more remote locations

To book on a First Aid Course, please read the guidelines and complete Highland Council’s Glenmore Lodge booking form.

If none of the advertised dates suit and you have a group of staff (min 6) we could possibly request another course date, please contact the Outdoor Education Resource Centre outdoor.ed@highland.co.uk to explore this option.

Water Safety Courses

For Highland Council employees who do not have a National Governing Body award that includes water safety in the syllabus, but take groups into environments where they might be operating;

  • At water margins
  • In shallow water for field studies / paddling
  • In water for a swim

We offer an in house accreditation course.

In any of the above situations it is necessary that the group leader is aware of the surrounding hazards and is able to minimize the risks by having adequate control measures, which would include going into the water to assist somebody.

Attendance on this course is free.

If you would like to attend, or require further information, please contact the Outdoor Education Resource Centre outdoor.ed@highland.co.uk

National Governing Body Training and Assessment Courses

After a successful first year of providing ‘free’ training and assessment opportunities we are pleased to be in a position where we can, in conjunction with Glenmore Lodge, continue to empower Highland Council staff to deliver adventurous activities to children and young people by offering ‘free’ places on NGB courses.

Popular courses this last year have been;
• Walking Group Leader
• Summer Mountain Leader
• Trail Cycle Leader

These are not the only NGB courses that you can attend, so don’t feel restricted. If it as an NGB training or assessment course run at Glenmore Lodge or their sister centre Cumbrae where sailing courses are run, we should be able to help.

Remember to take advantage of the reduced membership rate when joining the Mountaineering Council of Scotland and in addition, a reduced registration fee with Mountain Leader Training Scotland.

To book on a course, download and complete Highland Council’s Glenmore Lodge booking form.
