Prior to leading an off site excursion it is recommended that you read Highland Council's policy re accident reporting and also refer to the guidance notes.
It is important that Highland Council's insurance department is informed about any reported accident, even if the School Travel insurance policy has not been used.
Subsequent to reporting an accident, there is a requirement that each accident / incident is investigated.
When investigating accidents it is important to remember that the objective is not to apportion blame. The aim is to identify any underlying causes (i.e. lack of training, unsuitable equipment, etc) and to instigate remedial measures designed to prevent a recurrence.
Please refer to the guidance provided between pages 21 and 22 in the Outdoor Education Safety Document.
