From time to time funding becomes available to assist leaders wishing to further their skills, especially where a National Governing Body Award training and assessment programme is being followed to help establishments provide more opportunities to their participants.
If you coach/instruct on a Voluntary Basis
Coaching Highland can provide you with Coach Scholarship/Educational Grants
General Guidance
A grant is only awarded to those coaches who have been recognised for their commitment and contribution to sport in the Highlands and is awarded to provide an opportunity for you to further develop your coaching skills. Grants can be awarded for National Governing Body awards, sportscoach UK courses, tutor training, coach mentoring and coach workshops / conferences / seminars. We will also consider 1st aid courses if these are essential (where specified by the relevant National Governing Body) to the coaching qualification you are undertaking.
If you coach/instruct as part of your job as a Highland Council employee
The Outdoor Education Resource Centre (OERC) has secured funding and enhanced an existing training partnership with Glenmore Lodge, one of Scotland’s national training centres, to provide National Governing Body (NGB) training and assessment courses on a residential basis, where the course fees are paid for by Highland Council via the OERC. All other associated costs have to be met by the individual.

This is a short fixed term arrangement due to the funding package. It will unfortunately, not be an ongoing opportunity funded from the local authority budget.

Other Courses

Sportsmatch
Sportsmatch is an award scheme that supports grass roots sport projects that encourage participation at community level, especially youth groups.
In Scotland, Sportsmatch is funded by the Scottish Executive and administered by sportscotland.
Sportsmatch matches commercial business sponsorship on a £ for £ basis
Any not-for-profit group such as a sports club, local authority, governing body of sport, school etc. can apply.
We match sponsorship fees on a £ for £ basis. Although applicants are expected to be from not-for-profit groups, sponsors can come from any profit-distributing business, whether a bank, restaurant or local jeweller.
You can have at most 3 sponsors per project, each contributing at least £500.
Sponsorship can last between 1 and 3 years for any one project.
Sponsorship can be in cash or in kind with regards sporting equipment.
