Highland Council has several insurance policies of interest to those providing outdoor learning to pupils outwith their establishment grounds.
The Councils Insurance and Risk Services have produced a guide to the current policies. The most up to date document can be viewed in the Public Folder section of Microsoft Outlook
Public Folders\All Public Folders\Services\Finance Service\INSURANCE
Alternatively an example is available via this link HC Insurance
This guide illustrates what insurance is provided by default, two of the key policies are;
- Personal Accident
- Public Liability
It is important to note the following;
“Highland Council and High Life Highland provide Public Liability insurance to cover injury and property damage to third parties as a result of negligence by their employees, pupils, volunteers or contracted freelance staff.
As operating authority for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme the policy is extended to include all activities engaged in as part of the scheme.
Highland Council and High Life Highland also provide Personal Accident insurance for participants taking part in activities (including adventurous activities and non-professional associated racing) that take place before the start of the school day and after the school day finishes, this is also extended to include participants in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
No personal accident insurance is provided for participants taking part in activities (including adventurous activities and non-professional associated racing) that take place during the normal school day. (With regards to D of E participants, please refer to the specific D of E section below)
Should personal accident cover be deemed necessary by the establishment/group or parents, for participants taking part in activities (including adventurous activities and non-professional associated racing) that take place during the normal school day, this will need to be purchased by the establishment or the participants parents/guardians.
Highland Council and High Life Highland establishments/groups can purchase personal accident insurance to cover participants taking part in activities (including adventurous activities and non-professional associated racing) that take place during the normal school day from Highland Council by using the School Travel Policy, or from an external provider.”
