Highland Council and High Life Highland are advised by the Adventure Activity Licensing Authority (HSE) that periodic monitoring of activity sessions is seen as an important part of its safety management system. Their opinion is that regular monitoring accompanied by mentoring, support and advice enhances the work carried out by staff and volunteers and provides both parties with reassurance that what is being delivered is compliant with its safety policy and consistent with current best practice. The Council has also been reminded that they have a duty to carry out monitoring as directed by the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974).
Any member of Highland Council or High Life Highland staff delivering adventurous activity sessions can request a monitoring visit.
Staff in the Outdoor Education Service, who are responsible for carrying out the monitoring, will approach providers (HC or HLH staff) on a sampling basis, therefore staff can expect to be accompanied at some point in the field whilst delivering an adventurous activity session.
