Information for parents

The attached document Information for Parents which can be found in the current document section contains the ‘basic information’ as required by the Education (School and Placing Information) (Scotland) Regulations 1982.  While the information contained herein was accurate at the time of publication, changes may occur which would affect the accuracy of the detail.  The information provided refers to the school year 2007/2008.

Further details or supplementary information on other aspects of the educational provision in The Highland Council area can be obtained from your Area Education Manager. The names, addresses and telephone numbers of all Area Education Managers can be found in the current document section.

School Placing Requests - Parental Choice
As a parent you have the right to ask for your child(ren) to be education in a school other than the local school.  This applies only to primary and secondary school and not to pre-school or nursery provision.  Informatioin on school placing requests can be found in the leaflet entitled School Placing Requests and a Placing Request Form can be downloaded from the current document section.   

Tax Credit Award Information and free school meals
Information about details of Tax Credit Award Information and the new form relating to Free School Meals and clothing grants are available in the current document section.

Parents eligible to apply for free school meals should complete an Application Form for Free School Meals  which can be obtained from the current document section or from the local Service Point or school.

Smart Card technology is currently used in 23 schools to encourage a cashless system.  For a list of participating schools, further information and an application form contact Susan Mein on (01463) 251324, susan.mein@highland.gov.uk or via the Highland Council website.   Application forms for Lochaber High School are available from the school office on (01397) 702512.

School Transport
The policy of the Education Authority is that children under eight years of age may be expected to walk up to two miles to school and children of eight years and over may be expected to walk up to three miles to school.  Children outwith these distances are entitled to free conveyance to and from school and parents should apply by means of the appropriate form which can be obtained from the school concerned.  It can also be downloaded from this link School Transport Application Form.
