Mount Pleasant Primary School was built in 1966.  The situation of the school is a very pleasant one overlooking Thurso River and the Harbour.  There are magnificent views of the Pentland Firth, the Orkney Islands and the Old Man of Hoy, Thurso East and Thurso Castle and much of the town of Thurso.

The school is fortunate in having good-sized classrooms, a large assembly hall with stage, a gymnasium, a library, a music room and a Parents’ Room.  Within the main building we also have a Nursery and a Resourced Base.  The building by the main gate houses an independent Gaelic Medium Nursery.  There is a generous tarmac area around the school and a large grass area with two junior size football pitches.  We have recently developed an enclosed Nature Garden on the site of the old school Nursery.

At Mount Pleasant Primary School we aim to:-

  • create a safe environment where each individual is valued and there are equal opportunities for all pupils.
  • work towards an equal partnership with parents and the local community in supporting our children’s learning.
  • plan and deliver a broad and balanced curriculum within the 5-14 guidelines.
  • support all staff with a planned and coherent programme of continuing staff development.
  • maximise pupil attainment using appropriate long and short-term targets.
  • recognise achievement and celebrate success.
  • promote the physical, social, spiritual, mental and emotional health and well being of all pupils and staff*.
  • work with others in identifying and meeting the health needs of the whole school and its wider community*.
    Aims reviewed session 2004-05

At present there are 171 mainstream pupils, 3 pupils in the Resourced Base, 28 four year old and 19 three year old Nursery pupils.

The four year old Nursery operates five mornings per week and the three year old Nursery is available for five afternoon sessions.  Nursery brochures are available from the school office on request.
