Primary School Capacity and Occupancy

The spreadsheets in the Current Documents section located on the right hand side of this page contain information relating to school classes, capacity and occupancy levels in Highland primary schools.  The schools have been grouped according to their associated school group, that is, to the secondary school they feed into.

The educational rooms/spaces listed are those that could be utilised as a classroom.  The room’s current use, area and capacities, are indicated along with the class configuration currently occupying the room.  The information is a snapshot taken at one point in the academic year (Nov/Dec 2010), there may be small variation to classes throughout the year.

Three capacities measures are displayed for each school:

Recommended maximum capacity – this figure takes account of the available floor area for each of the educational spaces included within the school capacity.  Each room is divided by 1.75, as per the 1967 School Premises Regulations, in order to derive the maximum pupil capacity.

Planning capacity – is based on the number of educational rooms/spaces, the number of pupils who can be accommodated in these rooms and the current permissible class size, excluding composite classes.

Working capacity – is the planning capacity which is adjusted annually to take account of the relevant maximum class size for each year group or each composite class.  This is currently based on 25 in P1, 30 in P2 and P3, 33 in P4 to P7 and 25 for a composite class.

Occupancy % – is taken as a percentage of the total school roll to the total working capacity of the school.
