Spectators are encouraged to use public transport, walk or cycle, wherever possible, as Inverness is likely to be very busy that weekend with RockNess traffic, in addition to interest generated by the arrival of the Olympic Torch. It is anticipated that a large number of people will opt to use private cars and utilise the existing City Centre Car Parks.
The Bus, Coach and Rail Operators do not intend to provide additional capacity specifically for the Olympic Torch Relay or its associated Northern Meeting Park event.
Bus routes around the City will continue to operate as normal. Bus route Nos. 3 and 4 both operate from the City Centre and include several stops on Tomnahurich Street and Glenurquhart Road, close to the Northern Meeting Park.
Taxis will continue to operate from existing City Centre Taxi Ranks.
The Castle Wynd Taxi Rank will be out of commission between 10:15hrs and 10:45hrs on Monday 11th June 2012.
There will be no defined drop-off or pick-up point within the vicinity of the Northern Meeting Park or Highland Council HQ Car Park.
There is an expectation that traffic volumes in the Inverness area will be greater than normal, not only as a result of the arrival of the Olympic Torch, but because of the RockNess Music Festival , the Curtis Cup Golf Event in Nairn, and The Mountain Biking Challenge in Fort William. While RockNess takes place at Dores, some 7 miles south of Inverness, it is likely that traffic leaving this arena will interface with the Olympic Torch Relay at Inshes Roundabout and on the A9 (S) as far as Aviemore. Priority will be given to the OTR.
Public car parking in the vicinity of the Northern Meeting Park will be limited to OTR Event Support Vehicles, including those of the main sponsors.
Highland Council Staff will be able to continue to park in the HQ Car Park until 18:00hrs on Friday 8th June 2012. There will be some restrictions in place which will limit the use of this Car Park until 08:00hrs on Monday 11th June 2012.
Eden Court’s Car Park will be unaffected although staff and patrons are advised to access and exit using Bishop’s Road to/from Glenurquhart Road.
The Cathedral Car Park will be out of commission for public use from 08:00hrs on Thursday 7th June until 08:00hrs on Sunday 10th June 2012.
People who are intent in taking their vehicles into Inverness on Saturday 9th June 2012 should make use of existing City Centre Parking Facilities such as the Multi Storey Car Park in Rose Street and the Eastgate Centre Car Parks. Some on-street parking is available on Huntly Street but is likely to be heavily subscribed. Additional public parking is to be made available in the Bught Park.
Disabled parking will be available at the front of Highland Council’s HQ and overspill provision will be on Ardross Street, next to the Northern Meeting Park.
