Literary Landscapes

About Literary Landscapes

Interactive map

Literary Landscapes is a recent addition to the Am Baile website.  An interactive map of the Scottish Highlands and Islands featuring authors, past and present, local and visiting, who have been inspired by the landscape to produce evocative prose or poetry.  Click on the "map pins" to discover more about the writers associated with a each location.

Author pages

Each author has a dedicated page with supporting material such as illustrations; photographs; videos; and sound recordings. A short biography is followed by a bibliography with links to the Highland Libraries online catalogue. The recordings feature authors reading short passages of their own work; while authors from the past are read by schoolchildren and other local people.

Future developments

Literary Landscapes is a continuing project and further authors are added regularly.  Authors who seem to have been overlooked may yet be scheduled for inclusion, and we welcome all suggestions. Geographical coverage will extend to the Western and Northern Isles.

If you are a writer who has been inspired by the Highlands and Islands and would like to appear in Literary Landscapes, please get in touch.
