Photographic Collections

Some of our major photographic collections:

 

The Joseph Cook collection of photographs shows life in Inverness from the 1850s to the 1920s. Joseph Cook (1881-1973) was a director of Walker’s Sawmills, Inverness, and went to great lengths to acquire photographs of all aspects of his native town, many of which he used to illustrate talks he gave on the history and development of Inverness.

 

M.E.M. Donaldson (1876-1958) travelled extensively throughout the northern and western highlands in the early 20th century taking photographs.  Follow this link to view the M.E.M. Donaldson collection of photographs.

Jimmy Nairn (1900-1982) had a photography business and took many thousands of photographs in and around the Inverness area, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s.   Follow this link to view the Jimmy Nairn collection of photographs.

David Whyte (1841-1905), the self-styled ‘Leading Photographer of the North’, came to Inverness from his native Ayr in the 1860s and established a photographic business in the town.   Follow this link to view the David Whyte collection of photographs.
