You can run a Bookbug Pirate Pack distribution session as an ordinary story time or Bookbug Session, or make it different with a theme (e.g. pirates or jungle – see sample sessions). Whatever you do make sure you take time to show the children the pack and its contents (make it exciting!) before distributing them.
Preparation
- Use the Information Collection Sheet to record details of the visit
- Use the checklists as usual
- Make sure you find out how many children will be attending:
- How many are to receive Pirate Packs
- How many have already received them
- Arrange for the nursery teacher to collect the Pirate Packs for those children unable to attend
- Make sure you have enough Pirate Packs – contact your Area Base or LSU for more if necessary
- Prepare the space in the usual way for a class visit or Bookbug Session
- Make up goodie bags for the children who have already had their Pirate Packs – use library carrier bags and include things such as: a colouring in picture, bookmark, stickers (this is a good way to use up leftover items from previous promotions such as the summer reading scheme)
- If you are having a theme let the nursery know so that they can dress up if they wish
- If the children are going to be hunting for treasure make sure that it has been hidden about the library
- Arrange for a photographer to attend if necessary
- Check whether nursery have photograph permission slips
