Opportunities exist throughout the Highlands to participate in or enjoy watching arts activities. The Council organises regular programmes of classes and activities and also programmes high quality touring exhibitions in our own four galleries and other venues. During school holiday periods there is an emphasis on activities for children and young people

We also work with the voluntary sector to ensure there is a range of opportunities on offer throughout the Highlands, including professional theatre and concerts.

Highland Council Exhibitions Unit runs a programme of contemporary visual arts for four exhibition venues throughout Highland Region

As well as originating and touring our own exhibitions our programme is enlivened by hired touring exhibitions from outwith the region – giving Highland audiences as wide a possible spectrum of subject matter, media, curatorial approach and arts practice, and by touring each show overcoming the geographical restrictions to access for remote communities. 

The Highlands of Scotland have long been an inspiration to artists and crafts makers. The wild, rugged landscapes, the vibrant colourful cultural life, the friendly hospitable people; all feed into a quality of life envied across Europe. It is little wonder that artists who grow up in this region remain here, or if they do not, will often continue to refer to its influence throughout their working lives.

The exhibition programme has inspired the development of related education and marketing projects. Through residencies in schools and a programme to provide support for artists by promoting their work at Art Fairs the Highland Council Exhibitions Unit is committed to developing a thriving environment for Highland Artists.
