Obtaining Extracts (Certificates)

If you require a certified extract (birth, marriage, death or civil partnership) you may apply to the Registrar of the district where the event was registered. Alternatively all computerised registration offices in Scotland can provide extracts for any event registered in Scotland.

The statutory fee for an extract is £15 (with a further £10 payable for each additional extract ordered at the same time) or if purchased within one month of registration the £10 fee applies. Applications may be made in person, or by post.

This applies to all extract applications relating to entries in the Statutory Registers from 1855, when registration commenced in Scotland.

If you were legally adopted in Scotland, extracts are provided by General Register Office, New Register House, Edinburgh EH1 3Y. tel 0131 3144443, who advise on all adoption matters.
