The National Lottery has been running since 1994 and in that time has raised signficant funding for good causes. Lottery funds are distributed through a number of distributors. In Scotland this includes:-
Big Lottery Fund
The Big Lottery Fund (BIG) is the largest distributor currently responsible for distributing 50% of lottery funding. The main investment programme, Investing in Communities, consists of three funding streams:-
- Life Transitions
- 21st Century Life
- Growing Community Assets
In addition, BIG offers a number of smaller funding programmes such as Investing in Ideas and 2014 Communities. It also sometimes provides one-off or time-limited funding progammes such as Community Wildlife or Heroes Return.

Awards for All Scotland
Awards for All Scotland currently operates as a joint scheme between three lottery distributors. It provides grants of between £500 and £10,000 for a wide range of community, sports, arts, health and environmental projects. Voluntary and community groups, community councils, schools and health boards re amongst the organisations eligible to apply for funding. Community Spaces Scotland
Community Spaces Scotland is a £9m Big Lottery Fund (BIG) programme which aims to bring communities together around a space or place that matters to them. Find out more here.
Creative Scotland
Creative Scotland is the new national leader for Scotland’s arts, screen and creative industries. The organisation is in a transition phase and has inherited the funding commitments and investment strands of the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen. This includes managed funds and the distribution of lottery funding. During the transition period, applications for investment can be made along the previous Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen procedures using existing application details and guidelines. Heritage Lottery Fund
The Heritage Lottery Fund helps groups and organisations of all sizes and types to look after and enjoy the nation’s heritage. They fund a wide range of heritage activities including: cultural and local traditions, oral history, heritage associated with language or dialect, museums and galleries, historic buildings and landscapes, countryside and parks, and industrial, maritime and transport heritage.
