Around 3,000 Primary 7 children that attend schools throughout the Highlands and Islands area, will soon be attending one of a number of major child safety events that are currently being organised by the Highland Council.
The main objective of the Safe Highlanders and Islanders events is to educate children about all aspects of safety in a fun and enjoyable way. Agencies participating will include Northern Constabulary, Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service, Scottish Ambulance Service, British Transport Police, Health & Safety Executive, Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Highland Drug & Alcohol Action Team, Scotrail Railways Limited, National Farmers Union for Scotland, Scottish Crofters Union and the Highland Council.
To reinforce the very serious life saving messages taught at the event, the Highland Council, in conjunction with the Children’s Safety Education Foundation (Registered Charity Numbers: 1103344 and SCO37714), are launching a campaign to provide all the children that attend the event with a bespoke educational child safety handbook called Safe Highlanders and Islanders.
This special publication will not only serve as a reminder of what the children have learnt at the event, but also covers topics such as basic First Aid, Accident Prevention, Road and Water Safety, Bullying, and Drug Awareness. The handbook is specially designed to involve children in projects, activities and coursework, so it is both fun and educational at the same time.
Members of the Children’s Safety Education Foundation, whose objective is to provide schools that attend the event with their educational resources, are approaching local businesses for sponsorship.
The Highland Council is hoping that local businesses will support this vital educational project.
If you are able to help with sponsorship, or require more information, please contact The Community Safety Officer at the Highland Council on 01463 702246 or telephone the Children’s Safety Education Foundation on 08457 413591.
