2.1 Private Rented Housing - an Introduction

The private rented sector in the Highlands is very varied, particularly between the type of housing available in the towns and the country.

Rented accommodation comes in different types from bedsits to flats or houses and shared flats/houses. In some cases the house or flat may be shared with the landlord (resident landlord).  In others, the property may be managed by a letting agent or managing agent.

They can be either be furnished or unfurnished. Rents for the different types are likely to vary accordingly. Most landlords will want a deposit and rent in advance. In Inverness and Highland’s towns, there are now more properties for private renting but there also continues to be high demand from many different types of households including students.
