Information on Supported Accommodation

What is sheltered housing?

Sheltered housing can best be described as small easy to manage (almost always rented) properties, provided by the Council and housing associations.  They are grouped together in a scheme, sometimes with the services of an on-site warden. All the sheltered houses are provided with a community alarm (or help call) system, for use in emergencies.  This is either connected to the Council’s Warden Service or a resources centre and 24 hour cover is provided.  The Warden Service offers tenants security of knowing someone is there to help if needed.

What is amenity housing?

Amenity housing usually describes housing designed specially for older people or people with mobility difficulties. No warden service is provided although properties may have a community alarm (or help call) system, for use in emergencies.

Some communities also have mainstream council rented housing which is more suitable for older people or those with mobility difficulties. For example level access bungalows, ground floor flats, housing that has been adapted eg additional rails, stair lift, level access shower, and houses with downstairs bathrooms and other facilities.

How do I apply for sheltered or amenity housing?

You can apply for sheltered, amenity and appropriate mainstream housing using the Council's Housing Application Form.

The table below shows the sheltered housing stock owned by the Council in each area.   The Council has sheltered housing in all areas except Skye and Lochalsh.

Housing Associations provide much of the sheltered housing in the Highlands. More information on which Housing Associations provide what and where can be found in Section 4.3.

If you cannot see Council sheltered housing in the community you are interested in, check out the housing association sheltered housing. They may have something suitable in the area you want.

An ordinary Housing Application Form should be filled in to apply for Council owned sheltered accommodation. If you require any assistance in completing the application form, please let staff at any area housing office or Service Point know and they will be able to help.  You may also request the form in an alternative format, e.g. large print, Braille, or suitable language.
