Handy person scheme

Your local Handyperson Service is a partnership between the Highland Council and an Agent local to you, and is for people aged 65 or over who have difficulties with carrying out small jobs around the house, and for people of any age with a disability.

Below you will find information on:

What jobs can the Handyperson do?

Each Handyperson is fully equipped with tools and will be ready to undertake your repair. They will only charge you for the materials the Handyperson uses to complete the agreed work and will make no charge for the Handyperson’s time or travel expenses. Our Handyperson Teams have all been vetted by Disclosure Scotland and will be able to show you their identification badge when they knock on your door.

These are the kinds of things the Handyperson could help you with:

  • Changing light bulbs and tap washers
  • Moving furniture within the house
  • Securing carpets
  • Securing trailing wires and flexes
  • Putting up shelves,
  • Taking down and putting up curtains/tracks
  • Unblocking sinks and baths
  • Replacing toilet seats,
  • Repairing small areas of tiling
  • Resealing baths or sinks
  • Fitting grab rails and handrails
  • Fitting and repairing of locks
  • Fitting smoke/carbon monoxide alarms
  • Fitting chains and peepholes

The Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey Agent has joined forces with two voluntary organisations which means that a gardening service can also be offered through Care in Strathnairn and Volunteering Highland in this area.

Please call your local agent if your job is not listed and they will do their best to help you.

What adaptations can the Handyperson install?

In addition to the home repairs and household tasks, the Handyperson Staff are also able to fit minor adaptations:

  • Fit grab rails
  • Fit temporary ramps
  • Fit external handrails
  • Fit banister rails (stair handrails)
  • Level door thresholds

We can also install some types of specialised equipment if Social Work or NHS staff assess a need, including the Telecare range of equipment.

Sometimes the Handyperson may attend and find additional works that the applicant’s property may need. In these circumstances the applicant can be referred for assistance with major repairs or adaptations, or for further assistance with, for example, energy efficiency. We can also offer advice for people who need to arrange for their own tradesmen for larger repairs.

How do I apply?

You can contact any of the agents, or ask somebody to contact one of us for you, by telephone, email, or by popping into their office. You can also be referred if you have been visited by a Technical Officer, or Occupational Heath Colleague.
