HMIe Report on Lochardil Primary School, Inverness

In an HMIe report on Lochardil Primary School, Inverness Area, a range of strengths were identified. The primary school was commended for:

• The use of information and communications technology (ICT) to motivate pupils to learn

• Attainment in English language

• Pupils’ positive behaviour and application to their work

• Staff commitment to ensuring the care of pupils

• Pupils’ wider achievements within and outwith the school

• Relationships between senior managers, staff and pupils and the sense of pride permeating the school

In their report, the Inspectors judged that most aspects of the work of the school represented good and very good practice. They recognised the very good performance in English language and the school’s very positive climate and relationships with parents and others.  It also highlighted the school’s high expectations and its promotion of achievement and equality.

The Inspectors also made a number of recommendations for the school which included improving arrangements for meeting pupils’ needs.  The school was asked to continue to develop monitoring and evaluation procedures with a focus on learning and teaching.  The school and authority have been asked to address accommodation issues relating to traffic management and the building.

Commenting on the report Euan Mackie, Head Teacher, said: "I am very pleased with the report as I feel that it reflects the positive ethos of the school, the opportunities we provide for all children to achieve, positive teamwork and partnership with the parents and community and our commitment to improving the school.  We have already begun to address the issues raised in the report with the continuing support of everyone connected with the school."

Kenny Steele, the chairperson of the School Board, said: “This report is testament to the excellent quality of education at Lochardil and rightly highlights the contribution of the teachers and management to it’s success. The quality of the accommodation and facilities is a concern which must be addressed to maintain the motivation of the staff and ensure their hard work and professionalism is reflected in the quality of the learning environment.”
