HMIe report on Obsdale Primary School

In an HMIe inspection of Obsdale Primary and Nursery published today (29 June 2010), the following key strengths were identified:

Her Majesty’s Inspectors stated that children within the nursery engaged fully in their learning, particularly when they were able to choose their own activities. At the primary stages, pupils showed confidence and were experiencing success through a range of activities. Pupils were making progress from their earlier levels of attainment in listening, talking, reading, writing and mathematics and the majority attained appropriate national levels. They also demonstrated responsibility as citizens through their Eco-Schools Scotland, pupil council, junior road safety and health promotion activities. They found that staff provided high-quality care for all children and that they worked hard to ensure all pupils were included in school activities.

Inspectors noted that the head teacher was highly regarded by staff, children and parents and that she was skilled in promoting positive behaviour and attitudes amongst children. As a result, a strong sense of inclusion had been promoted across the school. They also noted that staff were committed to making further improvements and that they responded very positively to the leadership of the head teacher.

The inspectors also made a number of recommendations for the school which include the development of ‘Curriculum for Excellence’ to ensure that children have depth, personalisation and choice in their learning; to continue to improve children’s attainment and achievement and give them more responsibility for their learning; and to improve self-evaluation to ensure it impacts positively on children’s learning.

HMIe have requested a report from the education authority on these areas for improvement within one year of the publication of their report. Depending on the progress which has been made, they will consider whether or not to carry out a further inspection visit to the school.

Commenting on the report Mrs Frances Leslie, Head Teacher, who retires on 15 August 2010, after almost 19 years, said:  “There is disappointment that the HMIe did not see Obsdale Primary School at its best, but I am very pleased that the hard work and commitment of the staff team was recognised.

“The staff will apply themselves to the task of implementing the recommendations with their usual dedication, while continuing to provide the best educational experience for the pupils.”

Bill Fernie, Chair of The Highland Council’s Education, Culture and Sport Committee, said: “It is pleasing that the inspection has recognised the commitment of the Head Teacher and her staff. I have no doubt that the school will rise to the challenge of the required improvements, and that Obsdale will maintain and build upon the positive and inclusive education provided. I would like to thank Head Teacher, Frances Leslie for her service and commitment to the school over many years.”

Local Councillors , Carolyn Wilson; Maxine Smith; Martin Rattray and Mike Finlayson; all pay tribute to the commitment and dedication of Frances at Obsdale Primary School. They all recognise the very significant contribution made over many years to Obsdale school, community and pupils, and wish her a long, happy and healthy retirement.
