Highest ever number of teams challenging for Cuach na Cloinne
Over the next few weeks, hundreds of young Gaels will come together, representing the thirty schools from across Scotland, challenging for Cuach na Cloinne 2011.
Forty six teams will participate in this year’s competition – the highest ever number of entries. Cuach na Cloinne is organised by Comunn na Gàidhlig and funded by local authorities and other agencies.
Following the success of previous years’ competitions, CnaG has organised the 2011 competition with six regional competitions being held from which two teams from each competition will qualify for the Finals which will be held in Fort William on 1 October 2011. The regional competitions will be held in Lewis, Uist, Plockton and Inverness on the 3rd September, in Oban, for the first time, on 9th September and finally in Glasgow on the 10th September.
Donald MacNeill, Chief Executive of Comunn na Gàidhlig, said, “We are delighted with the high number of entries in the competition and especially pleased to welcome schools from Argyll and the Isles and Lochaber for the first time. The CnaG competition not only gives the children the chance to make their way through to the National Finals and indeed win the Cuach na Cloinne trophy but also provides them with an opportunity to meet up with other Gaelic-speaking children from across the country. It is vital that Gaelic-speaking children have opportunities to use their language out with the classroom and sporting competitions are an excellent vehicle for this. We are grateful to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, The Highland Council, Bòrd na Gàidhlig and MG ALBA for providing the funding to enable us to run this year’s competition.”
Twelve teams, qualifying from the regional competitions, will play in the Finals, which will be held in Fort William on 1st October 2011.
Cuach na Cloinne 2011, which is open to Primary 4 – 7 school pupils who have Gaelic, is funded by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, The Highland Council, Bòrd na Gàidhlig and MG ALBA and is organised by Comunn na Gàidhlig.
