New reuse container at Portree Recycling Centre

Portree is one of the latest communities to receive a reuse container at its Recycling Centre. The new facility, which is operated by Blythswood Care, will make it easier for residents to pass on unwanted household goods rather than send them to landfill. The container will accept furniture, kitchenware and bric a brac, textiles, toys, books, bicycles and sports equipment.

The Highland Council is providing reuse containers at a growing number of its Recycling Centres, both reducing landfill and helping to support communities. A grant from Zero Waste Scotland has secured funding for the three new containers – at Portree and Tain, both run by Blythswood, and at Brora, run by New Start Highland. It is anticipated that these will divert an additional total of 145 tonnes from landfill over the next three years. This will save the Council over £20 000 in disposal costs and landfill taxes. The grant from Zero Waste Scotland has also funded new signage and improved storage racking for Alness Recycling Centre.

Blythswood currently runs eight foodbanks in Scotland and an alcohol rehabilitation centre in Easter Ross.  Chief executive James Campbell said: “Blythswood is unique in that we are a UK-wide charity based in the Highlands.  We really appreciate the support of donors to The Highland Council reuse containers in Alness, Dingwall, Portree and Tain.”

Donated items should be in good condition, although lightly damaged or scratched (but not broken) wooden furniture is acceptable. Upholstered furniture must have a fire certificate attached but gas and electrical appliances are not accepted.
