  • Children in need of additional support and/or protection;
  • Services to the Courts and people who have contact with the Criminal Justice System;
  • People with mental health problems, or drug or alcohol dependency;
  • People who are homeless and in need of support;
  • Promoting social inclusion amongst the most vulnerable members of communities;
  • Supporting carers in the community

In the Highland Council area, Social Work Services work closely with partners in Health, Education, Housing, the Police and the Voluntary Sector to provide the best services possible to our clients.

Goals

  • To promote social welfare throughout The Highland Council area.
  • To offer cost effective and high quality services based on a full assessment of individual need.
  • To provide services in a manner which have respect for, and consideration of, people's qualities, views, and diverse backgrounds - social, cultural, ethnic and religious and which recognise the individual as a full citizen with all the rights and responsibilities that implies.
  • To support individuals and families in their own communities and to limit the requirement for institutional care by providing localised packages of care which are flexible and responsive to the changing needs of individuals.
  • To produce and publish community care plans in consultation with the NHS Highland, Housing Agencies and other interested organisations, along with representatives of community care service users and their carers and independent sector providers.
  • To provide the public with access to information on services which will promote the greatest degree of self-determination, informed choice and equality.
  • To actively promote in consultation with area committees, other council services and relevant agencies, a co-ordinated and integrated approach to the needs of the public which both reflects local priorities and is consistent with Social Work Service values and strategies.
  • To develop equal opportunity policies and practice both as a major employer and as a commissioner of services from other providers of care.
  • To support schemes to achieve the maximisation of income for all persons entitled to public assistance.
