As of 1 April 2013, the Highland and Islands Fire Board ceased to exist and was replaced by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
The Highland and Islands Fire Board was the fire authority for the area covered by Highland and Islands Fire and Rescue Service. Its members were Councillors appointed by the four Constituent Authorities within the Service area: Highland Council; Orkney Islands Council; Shetland Islands Council; and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
The Board's main functions were to: set the annual budget; appoint the most senior Fire Service officers; approve the annual Integrated Risk Management Plan; and undertake governance and scrutiny of Fire and Rescue Service performance and planning.
