As of 1 April 2013, the Northern Joint Police Board ceased to exist and was superseded by the Scottish Police Authority.
The Northern Joint Police Board was the police authority for the area covered by Northern Constabulary. Its members were Councillors appointed by the four Constituent Authorities within the Service area: Highland Council; Orkney Islands Council; Shetland Islands Council; and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
The Board's main functions were to set the annual budget; appoint officers of the rank of Assistant Chief Constable and above; deal with complaints involving officers of the rank of Assistant Chief Constable and above; keep informed as to how the Service deals with complaints.
