Images of China To Tour Highland Galleries (30/10/08)
An exhibition of photographs taken in China by Eve Arnold is about to start touring the Highlands.
Eve Arnold, who was born in 1912, was the first female member of the Magnum photo agency. Eve was one of the first Western journalists allowed into China where she spent a total of five months, covering forty thousand miles into far-flung areas.
Dazzled by the diversity within the country, Eve was given permission to photograph eminent politicians and representatives of the people’s congress.
When discussing her time in China she said: “Some days the bombardment of the senses was so intense, and the speed at which we moved so great, that by nightfall it seemed as though my mind had conjured up the images and that my will had made them real.”
The exhibition opens at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday (1 November) and runs until the end of the month before travelling to St Fergus Gallery in Wick (6th Dec – 2nd Jan) and the Swanson Gallery, Thurso (10th Jan-7th Feb)
