Spean Bridge Hotel Answers the Call (08/07/09)
To the relief of the Spean Bridge business community, The Highland Council has identified a new location for a comfort break in the village.
The welcome news is that the owners of the Spean Bridge Hotel have agreed to open up their toilets for public use this summer, during normal hotel opening hours (approximately 7am until 11pm).
The hotel is taking part in the Highland Comfort Scheme, operated by The Highland Council, which offers funding to operators of buildings to allow public access to their toilets. Operators must meet certain criteria in terms of cleanliness and opening hours.
The arrangement will be reviewed at the end of October. The previous toilet provision was lost when fire detroyed the neighbouring Spean Bridge Woollen Mill, operated by Edinburgh Woollen Mill. This affected neighbouring businesses and the business and community sector lobbied strongly for the Council to provide an alternative facility.
Councillor Allan Henderson, Provost of Lochaber, said: “ I personally welcome the decision by Spean Bridge Hotel to help out during the busy tourist season. It was absolutely essential that we found a solution to Spean Bridge’s problem, as this is one of the busiest junctions in the Highlands, as well as hosting the iconic Commando Memorial. ”
