Battle of Culloden original plan comes to Inverness (07/09/10)
The original plan of the Battle of Culloden will go on display at Inverness Library Monday 13 to Wednesday 15 September.
The Highland Council’s Library Service is delighted to host a National Library of Scotland (NLS) roadshow at Inverness Library when members of the public will be able to meet NLS staff from 9am to 5pm 13-15 September.
Visitors to the NLS roadshow will be able to:
- see the original Culloden Battlefield plan, dating from 1748;
- view rare items about the Highlands;
- read books on topics ranging from bagpipes to wave power;
- explore their family history at NLS;
- learn how to access the NLS from their sitting room; and
- come along to NLS film shows and see old Inverness on screen.
Events during the NLS roadshow include:
- Remote access to NLS resources and services - Find out how to access books, manuscripts, maps, films, digital resources, and expertise within the NLS from Inverness on Monday 13 September 2pm – 3pm;
- Tracing your Family History with the National Library of Scotland – a presentation on the unique family history research resources that are available at NLS, and an introduction to the digital resources that can be accessed externally on Monday 13 September 6pm – 7pm;
- Mapping the Highlands from the earliest times to the present day – a fully-illustrated talk looking at maps of the Highlands over five centuries, from the pioneering work of Timothy Pont in the 1580s and 1590s, through to present day Ordnance Survey and Google maps on Tuesday 14 September 2pm – 3pm;
- Scottish Screen Archive film show - Showcasing the film collections held at the Scottish Screen Archive, this event will feature early films from the 1890s, footage of St Kilda, the launch of the Queen Mary, the Empire Exhibition of 1938, wartime Scotland, and footage of Inverness over the years on Tuesday 14 September 7pm – 8pm.
