Eilean a’ Cheò Ward Civic Awards (27/06/12)
Community groups and individuals living on the Isle of Skye received Civic Awards from the Highland Council at a special awards ceremony held in Portree on Monday night (25 June 2012) in recognition of their achievements and contribution to their communities.
John Robertson, nominated by Kyleakin and Kylerhea Community Council, won the Community Award for his determined efforts on behalf of the community, and in particular for being a driving force behind the huge community fundraising effort that was required for the Kyleakin village hall.
The Young People Category Award was presented to Lorna Cormack for her work with both the Portree Pantomime Group and the Portree Drama Group. The Environment Category was won by the pupils at Edinbane Primary School for their imaginative project which involved recycling spectacles.
Angus Beaton, nominated by Portree Primary School pupils, won the Sport Category for his outstanding commitment to football coaching and the Arts and Music Award was won by Karen Campbell for her role in both in teaching highland dancing and organising the highly successful Highland Dancing Festival.
A special award was also made to Dr. Julian Tom in recognition of his tireless work for and on behalf of the community across Skye.
Each recipient received a certificate and a specially commissioned plate created by Uig Pottery, which they will retain for a year, after which it will be returned in time for the 2012/13 awards.
Speaking on behalf of the Ward 11 Members, who presented the awards, Councillor Hamish Fraser thanked the winners for their outstanding contribution to community life. He said: “We are so lucky to have in our communities such dedicated people who voluntarily give of their time and talents to help others, care for our environment and improve our communities. All the award winners are to be congratulated and we also thank everyone for their nominations.”
Nominations for the 2012/13 Civic Awards will be an announced in the Autumn.
