Highland and Moray Learning Initiative - Launch of Guide to Learning in Highland Museums (05/03/12)
Museum staff, volunteers and pupils from Strathpeffer Primary School are gathering at the Highland Museum of Childhood in Strathpeffer on Thursday 8th of March to celebrate the launch of a guide to learning in Highland museums.
Bill Fernie, Chairman of The Highland Council’s, Education, Culture and Sport Committee will launch the guide. The colourful booklet highlights the rich collections and range of resources available to schools in local museums and archives across Highland.
By promoting opportunities for active learning though object handling and role play, the guide aims to encourage pupils to discover more about the rich history of their area. The local collections of archaeology, history and photographs will help support classroom topic work and meet the wider needs of the Curriculum for Excellence. To assist teachers in planning a visit, the guide includes a helpful section which links the services offered in each museum to specific areas of the Curriculum.
The booklet is the culmination of a 6 month initiative led by a partnership of Highland Council, Highland Museums Forum, Moray Council, Moray Heritage Connections and the National Trust for Scotland. The project is supported through grant funding from Museums Galleries Scotland. This partnership aims to support museums to improve their services for schools through training and sharing best practice nationally. As part of the project, museums will encourage more schools to visit, find out more about their outstanding collections and the resources which they have on offer.
