Nairn schoolboy comes of age at Olympic Games (30/05/12)
Young Nairn ambassador, Jamie MacDonald, has not only been chosen to carry the Olympic Torch as it makes its way around the country but he has been signed up to work at the Olympic Games.
Jamie, a sixth year pupil at Nairn Academy, was nominated to carry the torch by Sportscotland and will take part in the relay in Stirling on 13 June.
In July he is heading to work as a Young Ambassador with Coca Cola at the Olympic Village and he will spend his 18th birthday on 22 July at the Games.
Jamie said: “At first I was disappointed that I was not running with the torch in the Highlands. But I then realised the torch is in our area at the same time as RockNess. So I am now delighted that I can attend RockNess and at the same time carry the torch. I am also greatly looking forward to the experience of working at the Olympics as a Young Ambassador for one of the major sponsors, Coca Cola. Exciting times.”
In his role as a Youth Ambassador for the Olympics, Jamie has organised and delivered mini - Olympic events in local primary schools, promoted fairplay, awarded Sports Star Certificates and delivered various sporting activities around the theme of good sportsmanship. He also planned and delivered an Olympics Event to Primary school pupils in Malawi with minimum resources. Jamie has been part of the Sports Leaders Project for three years. He has volunteered in local primary schools, secondary and the wider community.
