How to use the corporate identity of The Highland Council.
Introduction
Since 1996, The Highland Council has used a Corporate Logo, bearing the message “Serving the Highland Community” and eight area variations e.g. “Serving Nairn” etc. The changes brought about by the move to 22 multi-member wards and the disbandment of eight area committees has had significant implications on the use of the Corporate Logo.
From Tuesday 8th May, 2007 following the Council Elections, we will use only the Corporate Logo, “Serving the Highland Community”, as the area variations will no longer be applicable.
These guidelines define the correct use of The Highland Council corporate identity. The instructions and guidance contained below apply to all staff and employees of The Highland Council and also to external suppliers such as printers, signmakers etc.
The guidelines specify the way the logo should be used by The Highland Council in a wide variety of situations, ranging from stationery and publications to signage and vehicle livery. It is most important that all concerned follow these guidelines to the letter and, if ever in doubt, seek guidance from the Public Relations Office of The Highland Council on the correct application for any situation.
In order to maintain the effectiveness of the corporate identity for The Highland Council a proof checking system has been established. For further assistance please contact:

Carrying as it does important messages about The Highland Council, the corporate identity must be applied correctly and protected by everyone involved in the Council’s work. This publication has an important part to play in helping you to get it right, first time and every time.
The Highland Council corporate identity.
The corporate identity for The Highland Council comprises a logo and the system for its consistent application. The corporate identity promotes the image of The Highland Council to the Highland community and helps people recognise the extent of Highland Council involvement in the provision of services. It is therefore essential that it is used consistently, correctly and appropriately. The logo must be applied to all printed and published materials and should also be used to brand and help promote projects, products and services. The following guidelines are to assist you in this.
The Highland Council logo is the corporate identity of The Highland Council and no other logo should be used to represent services or activities of the council without express permission of the Chief Executive. Services or sections of services should not create their own logos to represent their units/projects/teams etc.
Approved variations of the logo.
There are two versions of the logo: a rectangular version, and circular version, both available in black and white and colour.
In all general circumstances the rectangular version of the logo is the logo to use. There are certain instances where the round version of the logo is deemed more appropriate. These are vehicle liveries, headquarters/office signage and road signage. If you require to use the round version of the logo for any other purpose please contact Gordon Fyfe, Public Relations Manager, for permission and advice.

The following rules apply to The Highland Council logo.
How the logo SHOULD be used.
The logo shown here is the approved version of the logo for general use. This should not be fragmented or modified under any circumstances. All elements of the logo – map symbol, lettering and the solid line across the bottom of the logo – make up the entire design of the logo and must always be used together.
How the logo should NOT be used.
1. Individual elements of the logo design must never be omitted.
 |
2. The map symbol must never be used independently of the lettering.
 |
3. The logo should never be reproduced vertically or at an angle.
 |
4. The logo must never be distorted – any reduction or enlargement should be equal so that the logo reproduces in proportion e.g. when re-sizing never squash or stretch the logo.
 |
5. The lettering is part of the logo design and the fonts must not be changed in any way.
 |
6. The logo should never appear against a conflicting or busy background and should be kept clear of other graphic elements.
 |
7. Additional text must not be added to the logo, such as services, operational areas or council wards.
 |
8. In normal circumstances, on a white background, the logo must not be enclosed in a box or shape.
 |
9. To ensure the quality of image reproduction, the logo must never be reproduced/scanned from previously printed material.
 |
10. In order to ensure legibility, the logo should not be reproduced at less than 30mm width.
 |
Logo colour reference guide.
The Council logo is to be reproduced in single colour against a white background, either in purple or in black.
The correct shade of purple is Pantone reference PMS 267. Certain elements of the logo appear in a 50% tint of PMS 267. You must never use any other colours.
If the print/production process does not use the Pantone reference system the colour/ink should be matched as closely as possible to PMS 267.
