Northern Joint Police Board Information

The Northern Joint Police Board is the police authority for the area covered by Northern Constabulary. Its members are councillors appointed by the four Constituent Authorities within the Force area (Highland Council; Orkney Islands Council; Shetland Islands Council; Comhairle nan Eilean Siar/Western Isles Council).

The Board's main functions are:

  • setting the annual budget;
  • appointing officers of the rank of Assistant Chief Constable and above;
  • dealing with complaints involving officers of the rank of Assistant Chief Constable and above;
  • keeping informed as to how the Force deals with complaints.

The Board generally meets four times per year to receive reports on policing activities and developments and to discuss matters of interest or concern, with its budget meeting taking place in January.

Scottish Government Guidance sets out the roles and responsibilities of police authority members.
