The General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) supplies us with annual population estimates for small areas which we build up to give totals and changes at Ward level. These estimates aim to exclude short term migrants.
Tain and Easter Ross contains a mixture of urban and rural areas with a population density above the Highland average. The overall age profile is similar to the Highland average with a slightly higher proportion of people in the 50-64 age group. There has been a slight increase in the overall population since the 2001 Census. Only low numbers of overseas migrant workers registered in the Ward between 2002 and 2006.

A low number of new homes were built in Tain and Easter Ross during the last five years. The Local Plan also shows a modest supply of land zoned for housing development within the next four years. The number of sites is believed to be adequate in principle but around half cannot be started until Scottish Water improve their infrastructure which could lead to a general shortage of viable sites.

One feature of Highland life is that employment is often dependent on seasonal industries such as tourism, and employment rates vary through the year as people take up seasonal jobs but are unemployed for the rest of the year.
Both the unemployment rate and long term unemployment rate are above the Highland average. The Incapacity Benefit claim rate and Council Tax Benefit claim rates are well above the Highland average.
