Highland Fresh Mussels

Highland Fresh Mussels Ltd operate from the picturesque Dornoch Firth, nestled between the Ross and Cromarty and Sutherland Areas of the Scottish Highlands. It is the most northerly of Scotland’s large firths. The mussel fishery has had a long association with the people of Tain. The mussel scalps belonged to the Crown up until 1612. At this time the ownership of the mussel scalps and the right to fish for the mussels was bequeathed to the Royal Burgh of Tain, in perpetuity, by James VI of Scotland who used to make pilgrimages to the tomb of St Duthac in Tain. The Fishery now forms part of the Common Good of the old Royal Burgh area. In the past, the Dornoch Firth Mussels have provided an important source of food during times of famine, and is today considered an excellent source of protein as well as a desirable food item.
