Animals and Pest Control

Phone 01349 886603 or email service.point@highland.gov.uk to report incidents.

Pests in the home, stray dogs, dog fouling and litter cause annoyance and health risks to the general public. To combat these problems Community Works provide advice, carry out enforcement action and in the case of pests a treatment service.

Seagull Control

Generally it is illegal to capture, injure or destroy any wild bird or interfere with its nest or eggs. Read our guidance about dealing with gulls

Pest Control

Officers from the Section can offer advice on pests and infestations. Treatment services are provided for the following pests in domestic properties: rats, mice and household insect pests of public health significance, including wasps. A fee is made for any treatment carried out.

Stray Dogs

Dog Wardens patrol areas and respond to calls to catch stray dogs. The dogs are then transferred to kennels where owners will have to pay for the return of the dog. If the owner does not claim the dog every effort is made to re-house the animal. The Dog Wardens also visit schools to provide information on good dog control.

Dog Fouling

As well as being antisocial, dog fouling can cause blindness and other illness in children. The Section provides poop scoops, dog bins, anti-fouling signs and does educational work to encourage responsible dog ownership. Officers may also target known problematic areas to warn and possibly prosecute offenders.

Green Dog Walkers scheme

The Green Dog Walkers (Highland) Scheme is a community led initiative to combat dog fouling in Highland. Find out more about Green Dog Walkers.

Litter Control

Further to the litter bins and street cleaning services provided by the Council, the Section has the power to issue fixed penalty notices to offenders. Initiatives undertaken include officers patrolling routes to schools.
