Where a proposed development is considered to be a threat to either known or potential archaeological sites, developers may be asked to contract a professional archaeologist to undertake a programme of work. Depending on the significance of the sites, the work may vary from a basic photographic record to archaeological monitoring or excavation.
The Highland Council draft Standards for Archaeological Work sets out practical guidelines for a consistent approach to the management of the historic environment within the planning process in Highland.
The Standards document is currently out for public consultation. Comments on the document are welcome and further details can be found on the Planning Consultations webpage.
The Standards sets out the minimum standards for archaeological fieldwork and reporting required by the Planning Authority, as well as more general considerations. This guidance will be supplemented by site specific requirements on a case by case basis.
The Standards is intended for use by all those involved in the planning process – to inform planners and applicants of the specific requirements of a particular condition and to ensure historic environment practitioners conduct fieldwork to an acceptable standard. A glossary is available to explain archaeological terminology.
