Development Guidance

Where a proposed development is considered to be a threat to either known or potential archaeological sites, developers may be asked to contract a professional archaeologist to undertake a programme of work. Depending on the significance of the sites, the work may vary from a basic photographic record to archaeological monitoring or excavation.

The guidance contained within the documents on this page sets out practical guidelines for a consistent approach to the management of the historic environment within the planning process in Highland.

The guidance therefore sets out the minimum standards for archaeological fieldwork and reporting required by the Planning Authority, as well as more general considerations.   This guidance will be supplemented by site specific requirements on a case by case basis.

The guidance is intended for use by all those involved in the planning process – to inform planners and applicants of the specific requirements of a particular condition and to ensure archaeological contractors conduct fieldwork to an acceptable standard.  A glossary is available to explain archaeological terminology.
