Heritage North

Historic Scotland
Historic Scotland is the branch of the Scottish Executive which safeguards the nation's historic environment by scheduling monuments of national importance and by listing historic buildings of special architectural or historic interest. This site includes information on properties in state care and details of Scotland's listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments. The Education pages provide a resource for schools and information on conservation research.

The Institute of Field Archaeologists (IFA) The IFA is the professional organisation for archaeologists in the United Kingdom. It promotes professional standards and ethics for conserving, managing, understanding and promoting enjoyment of heritage.

The National Archives of Scotland
The National Archives of Scotland holds our national documents and preserves, promotes and presents them to the nation.

The National Trust for Scotland
The National Trust for Scotland is the conservation charity that protects and promotes Scotland's natural and cultural heritage for present and future generations to enjoy.

The National Library of Scotland
The National Library of Scotland is an information treasure trove of Scotland’s knowledge, history and culture, with books, manuscripts and maps covering every subject.

National Museums of Scotland
NMS is Scotland's national museum service.

 RCAHMS
The site of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) who are responsible for recording, interpreting and collecting information about the built environment.  Includes on-line access to the National Monuments Record for Scotland - (CANMORE and PastMap)

Scottish Coastal Archaeology and the Problem of Erosion (SCAPE)
SCAPE is a charity that seeks to research, conserve and promote the archaeology of Scotland's coast. SCAPE is especially interested in remains that are threatened by coastal erosion.  SCAPE manages and undertakes a variety of projects including Coastal Zone Assessment Surveys and several excavations as well as running the Shorewatch project.

Am Baile - Highland Heritage and Culture
Am Baile is an online archive of the history and culture of the Scottish Highlands and Islands. It holds photographs, illustrations, rare books and documents as well as short films, audio clips, interactive games and comics. It also contains material from archives, libraries, museums and private collections, much of it published here for the first time. 

 Ardnamurchan Transitions Project 
The Ardnamurchan Transitions Project is a collaborative project between the Universities of Manchester and Newcastle. The project aims to investigate evidence for the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age periods (from about 9000 to 1000 BC) on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, and the nature of the transitions between these crucial periods.

Caithness Archaeological Trust 
Caithness, the most northerly county in mainland Britain, is incredibly rich in prehistoric and historic monuments and landscapes. From the peaty interior to the staggering coastline, evidence of early people's lives can still be seen and visited today.

High Pasture Cave
This is the website for the ongoing work at Uamh an Ard Achadh (High Pasture Cave) on the Isle of Skye.  Archaeological fieldwork at the cave site since the initial discovery in 2002 has included survey and excavation, both within the cave passages and on the surface, where a fascinating complex of prehistoric stone-built structures have been identified.

Inverness Field Club
Instituted in 1875 and still going strong.  "While still keeping faith with the indefatigable questing spirit of our predecessors, today's Field Club hopes, by this varied range of activities, to stimulate an interest in, and an understanding of, our local environment, history and heritage"  There are meetings throughout the year and Summer study excursions are organised to all parts of the Highlands.  Members' interests are very varied, covering natural history, geology and local history.

Moidart Local History Group
Moidart is a remote and beautiful coastal area of the Scottish West Highlands with a long and complex history. The Moidart Local History Group, (Comann Eachdraidh Mùideart), exists to promote an active interest in the history, heritage and culture of Moidart and to bring together interested individuals and organisations.
 
North of Scotland Archaeology Society
The North of Scotland Archaeological Society (NOSAS) exist  to further the study of archaeology in the North of Scotland and to promote that interest to a wider audience. NOSAS events are a great chance to meet like minded people and share ideas and information.

NPPG5: Archaeology and Planning
How archaeology is dealt with in the planning process.  Planning guidance issued by the Scottish Office and adopted by the Highland Council as policy in 1994.

Scottish Archaeological Internet Reports
This is effectively a free online journal of Scottish Archaeology.   SAIR reports on Highland subjects include No.5 on Loch Shurrery hut circle and No.9 on Loch Borralie burial cairn.

Scottish Treasure Trove
The official website for Treasure Trove in Scotland. This site provides information on all aspects of how finds of archaeological and historical significance in Scotland are recorded and protected.
