In addition to improving the way energy is managed in buildings, the Council is implementing a plan to reduce CO2 emissions in vehicle fleets, street lighting and landfill sites. The plan was developed in collaboration with the Carbon Trust, a Government backed company that is helping business and the public sector move towards a low carbon economy. The Plan sets strategic targets to reduce CO2 emissions by 2010 by at least:
- 5% in staff travel
- 4.5% in the Council’s fleet
- 1.5% in waste management, and
- 1% in street lighting.
This will deliver an overall reduction in CO2 emissions of 6.8% measured against the 2004/05 baseline. Measured against “Business as Usual” projections, it represents an effective saving of 15% in CO2 emissions by 2010.
