Food Labelling

Food Safety Officers (FSOs) regularly take samples of food for analysis to check that the food is as described.

Common problems identified are:

  • Adding unauthorised additives to food
  • Serving cheaper spirits as more expensive brands
  • Watering down spirits
  • Selling cheaper foods as a more expensive food (e.g., whiting for haddock, monkfish for scampi)

FSOs can take appropriate enforcement action against a food business found to be breaching food standards legislation.  Food must be of the nature, substance and quality demanded by the purchaser.
