Food Poisoning
Food poisoning can make people very ill and can even kill. There are normally over 3,000 reported cases of food poisoning in Scotland every year, although the true figure is thought to be much more as it is agreed by the experts that only ten percent of people visit their doctor when they suffer the symptoms of food poisoning.
Although food poisoning is unpleasant for anyone, for vulnerable people it can be life-threatening.
Vulnerable people include:
- Babies
- The elderly
- Pregnant women
- People who are already ill or recovering from illness or an operation
Our shopping and eating habits and the foods we eat are constantly changing. This brings with it new hazards. It is the job of officers from Environmental Health to help ensure that food is safe to eat when we buy it.
One of the techniques to ensure food businesses comply with food legislation is to carry out Inspection of food premises.
