Background Information on Environmental Health Inspections
Officers from Environmental Health carry out routine inspections to ensure businesses are complying with three areas of legislation:
- Food Hygiene
Under the Food Safety Act 1990 Officers will inspect food businesses to ensure they are complying with Food Hygiene Regulations. These Regulations set out standards proprietors must meet in their operational procedures, in the cleanliness of their premises, and in the structural standard of the premises to ensure safe food is produced.
- Food Standards
Also under the Food Safety Act 1990 Officers will inspect food businesses to ensure they are complying with Food Standards Regulations. These Regulations set out standards for labelling, advertising and composition of food.
- Health and Safety at Work
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 is the principal piece of legislation dealing with the health and safety of people at work. The Environmental Health Service enforce this legislation in places such as shops, warehouses, offices, places used for leisure and consumer services, hotels, restaurants and churches. Officers have to consider not only the health and safety of workers but also members of the public who can be affected by work activities.
