From the 1st December 2010 the Highland Council charged for the service of creating postal addresses.
The Council are responsible for street naming and the numbering of new developments and for arranging with Royal Mail for the creation of postal addresses for new and existing properties.
For properties which are already registered with Royal Mail but which require an amendment to house name or other vanity change, please contact the Corporate Address Gazetteer team by phone or email at the bottom of this page. There is no charge for this particular service.
For new developments we require your proposals for naming and/or numbering to be submitted within one month of receipt of your Building Warrant Approval, this is to ensure postcodes and addresses are allocated well in advance of the occupation of a property
It is your responsibility to request this service.
CHEQUES ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTED FOR THIS SERVICE.
The charges cover the costs of providing this service and includes:
- For new build properties only: Agreement of Street and Block Naming (where required)
- For new build properties only: Creation of Numbering Scheme (where required)
- For new AND existing properties: Provide correct form of addressing to the Royal Mail to enable them to allocate the postcode and to update the Post Office Address Files (PAF)
- For new AND existing properties: Communicate correct final addressing to the Emergency Services, Assessor, Electoral Roll and the One Scotland Gazetteer
Why should I apply for an address?
The correct creation and communication of new addresses enables the efficient and effective delivery of Council services to your property. In addition to this delivery companies, Internet ordering, and an ever increasing range of organisations rely on the Postcode which is provided by the Royal Mail to be able to identify your location and deliver goods and services to you.
Single Property Development:
In the case of a single property development requiring only a house name or number please complete the application form either online or submit by post. Your property will be referenced to the named street (where applicable) from where access is gained.
Multiple Property Developments:
For multiple property developments where new street or block naming is required (including within commercial/industrial developments) please submit a site plan of the development with your naming proposals (if any) for street or block names with the completed application form. Where street and/or block names are required – we will forward your proposals to the appropriate Ward Manager to consult with local representatives (Community Council and elected members) on the proposed naming.
Once completed, the “agreed name/s”, postcode, post town and the numbering scheme will be communicated back to you. This agreed name will be recorded by Royal Mail as the official postal address.
For one address – the charge for the naming service is £86
For Multiple addresses – the £86 charge applies – plus additional charges per address thereafter – as described below.
£51 one off admin fee for re-numbering new developments which have already completed street naming and numbering. (This is after the initial Street naming and numbering has been confirmed)
Due to increasing budget pressures the Highland Council regrets that
a 2% administration charge on all credit card payments is applicable.
