Dangerous and Defective Buildings

The Building Standards Service of Highland Council has responsibility for ensuring the public's safety from dangerous and defective buildings in the Highland area.

This is achieved primarily by encouraging owners to take their own responsibilities seriously and maintain their properties in a safe and secure manner.

There are, however, cases where owners fail to take appropriate steps or when emergency action is required.

In these cases Building Standards Officers have powers under the Building (Scotland) Act 2003, which can and will be employed to make buildings safe, or prevent access to the public.

You are encouraged to contact your local area office during working hours should you wish to report a dangerous building.
